Types of EDM and their characteristics

Features of EDM
By using wire or shaped electrodes, even complex shapes can be machined with high precision. In addition, even high hardness materials, such as cemented carbide, can be processed if it is conductive. By correctly shaping the electrodes, it is possible to accurately process things that are difficult to achieve with other processing methods, such as small diameter processing and complex pocket shapes. Furthermore, products can be processed as a single piece with no need of dividing, so the number of parts can be reduced and strength can increased.
Types of EDM
There are three main types of EDM: WEDM, die-sinking EDM, and small hole EDM.
WEDM
This is a processing method that uses wire-shaped electrodes that are sequentially sent out to carve out the required shape from the workpiece like a coping saw.
Die-sinking EDM
This is a processing method of making the shape of electrode into the workpiece by electric discharge. The processing shape is determined by the specific shape of the electrode.
Small hole EDM
This is a processing method that uses a very thin pipe or round bar as an electrode to make a hole in the work piece. It is mainly suitable for machining small diameter holes such as start holes in the workpiece for WEDM.
